ZNDP 053 – How your role directly impacts your Design Mindset

How Your Role Impacts Your Design Mindset
How Your Role Impacts Your Design Mindset

Hey!! You want to learn how your role directly impacts your Design Mindset and how to be successful in all of your design situations, well make sure you listen to this entire episode.

My name Zig Zsiga I’m here to help you become the best Network Designer you can be!

Above all else, your mindset is the most important item in Network Design. Your Design Mindset!! Knowing technology is critical but it is the easy portion.  We can put in the effort and time to learn what we don’t know from a technology perspective.  A lot of people that create Network Designs do not have a proper Design Mindset. Most of us are not taught the proper design mindset until later in our careers.

How Your Role directly impacts your Design Mindset

Your Role directly impacts your Design Mindset!  It can broaden your design options but it can also limit your design options.

Your role is very important because it can constrain what options you have available to you when you are designing a solution.

Role Example

A good example of this is if your role is working for an Enterprise company.   Being a full-time employee for an Enterprise company as a network engineer, architect, and designer will limit the different options you have when it comes to a Service Provider design situation. Let’s use a real example to show how this can actually play a significant impact in the design decision process.

Let’s continue with the role of a Network Designer for an Enterprise Company.  In this situation, you have an MPLS transport provider that offers you MPLS L3VPN connectivity.  They are leveraging the MPLS QoS Tunnel Mode Uniform. Below in the MPLS QoS Tunnel Modes Table, we highlight the different MPLS QoS Tunnel Modes.

MPLS QoS Tunnel Modes

Because the MPLS Provider is running the Uniform Tunnel Mode, our own DSCP markings are being overwritten.  From a design perspective and our role, we are limited to what we can do here to mitigate this situation. As our traffic comes back into our Enterprise, say at a remote branch location, we still want to enforce our own DSCP markings.  In this design situation, we only have the option of manually matching the intended traffic and remarking it to our own DSCP policy.

Now if we take this same situation but our role was that of a Network Designer for the Service Provider that provides the MPLS Service, we have a number of design options to choose from one of which is to change the MPLS QoS tunnel mode.

This example shows How Your Role directly impacts your Design Mindset and how extremely critical it is as it provides you a perspective that affects the different design options available.

Free Resources

We have created a new page on our site to have one locations for all resources. In June 2020, two new Free resources were published. On July 24th, 2020 we published a new Free resource titled Free Non-Technical Guide to the CCDE Practical. We are calling them #FreebieFridays! More Free resources will be published soon! All of them will be included on the Zigbits Resources page

Here are all of the free resources we have published to date!

  1. Free Guide of The Benefits of SD-WAN
